What Robot Fixation?

No really, I have no idea what you’re talking about.

Grad School Here I Come!

23 May 2010

So, the application madness has ended. I’m done with studying for the GRE and the GMAT. My scores were fairly decent (though I feel I could have done better). Essays have been written, recommendations have been begged for (thank you!), applications have been submitted, and interviews completed.

The result?

I have been accepted into IIT’s Institute of Design’s graduate Design/MBA program!!!

You should have seen me after I opened the email, I was jumping up and down like a crazed dog jumps at the door. And no, I am not ashamed of acting like a crazy person. But, in case you don’t understand all the insanely happy jumping, let me explain:  I should probably start by mentioning that ID was ranked as one of the world’s top design schools by Business Week in 2009. Their graduate program is approximately 25% female and and only about 25% of the participants have non-design undergraduate degrees. That means 6% of students are both female AND non-design majors (this is the category I fall into). If you smoosh these statistics together, it means I’m feeling pretty darn special at the moment, and can’t WAIT to get to school.

Chicago here I come!

We interrupt your normal programming to bring you this announcement

21 Jan 2010

Blog is on hiatus while I scramble to do all my grad school applications. In case anyone was wondering if I had fallen off the edge of the earth or something similar, I’m alive, well, and going crazy with stress. I apologize and promise your regular doses of awesomeness will resume shortly.

The Robot Pillow Revolution

03 Jan 2010

Just thought I would share pictures of the new pillows I added to my Etsy store. Here are some quick snaps I took of robots number 1 and 2 (Mustachioed Robot and Sketchy Robot) in my new robot series. I’m thinking of expanding it beyond pillows to maybe wall art, buttons, or t-shirts as well. Any suggestions as to what items would look better covered in robots?

I have a list of about 65 possible robots I could make, so more are definitely on the way, and suggestions are always appreciated.

Welcome to 2010

02 Jan 2010

I really hate it when a new year starts. Mainly because I am going to go on writing 2009 on everything for the next two months and crossing it out. Ok, that’s not the real reason. The real reason for my hatred of New Years is the public obsession with new years resolutions. I hate new years resolutions. I just don’t believe in them.
Everyone gets excited when a new year starts because they only think of one thing: new beginnings. However, time doesn’t function that way. People need to stop thinking of the new year as a fresh start where everything is going to magically change and get better. January 1st is just another day in a continuum of days. There isn’t a shut down on 2009 at 11:59 pm and then a reboot at 12:00 am. January 1st is almost identical to December 31st — except with more litter from drunken partiers.

Honestly, there is nothing worse for people’s self-esteem than new years resolutions. Why do we do this to ourselves? New years resolutions are practically made to be broken. And all those people who go out and buy gym memberships and start diets, or swear to pay off ALL their credit card bills, or promise to quit smoking, or whatever your resolution is, are just setting themselves up for disappointment.

I think it’s wonderful when people try to change things in their lives, when they try to work on becoming better people. But self improvement shouldn’t be relegated to January 1st. It is a constant process that can’t be pinned down to a single day. And if you slip up? That’s ok. It doesn’t mean you have to quit trying. Just give yourself a break and keep going.

So, if you want, try these things just because and not due to anything the calendar says:

  • go hiking in a state park, if you are really adventurous, pitch a tent
  • learn how to make something new
  • bake a cake just because, invite your friends over for tea
  • make a new friend, let them into your life
  • take a class at a college or university
  • walk more, drive less
  • adopt an animal, think of a fun name
  • rearrange your furniture, take before and after shots
  • turn off your computer and television for a week, see what happens (I’ll miss you, but its ok)
